hree years ago today, I met a stranger with curly brown hair. I was an undergraduate student at the University of Guelph, and working as a research assistant at the Ontario Veterinary College. My job that day was to train two new students to navigate the lab and to use our lab space for their own research. We all arrived too early for work, where the office doors were still locked from the night before. Thanks to my transition period in the lab, I didn’t yet have my own set of keys to the office, and I remember feeling so unprofessional for not having the ability to unlock the doors and begin training. As we waited on the cold linoleum floor of the hallway for help to arrive, we made our introductions, and learned that we would be working very closely all summer. Looking back now, it’s funny to think about how this insignificant moment would turn out to be such an important event in our lives; this was the first time I would ever talk to the love of my life. I can still walk past those linoleum squares and picture us there together, and I thank my lucky stars for every decision that ever lead us to that moment.
So, to that curly haired stranger who kept me company in the hallway: thank you, I love you, and I can’t wait to look back at this moment every year as our relationship continues to grow.
